It was in March 1983 that the Gibson’s Brothers took over Le Baiser Salé 58, rue des Lombards in the heart of Paris. These three West Indian brothers, successful musicians, authors, among others, of the global hit Cuba, decided to open the Baiser Salé and turn it into a Café Concert where you could have a drink while listening to a live band.
A few months later, a change of formula, the only group that played every night gave way to a weekly program, quickly set up by the current programmer Maria Rodriguez.
This was the real beginning of Le Baiser Salé Jazz Club…
Developing mixed creative music and going beyond the framework of the traditional jazz club, these are the objectives of the Baiser Salé program from January 84. It is a succession of much more jazz groups with a clear orientation towards jazz fusion, then called jazz rock, and a marked predilection for mixed music. From these roaring twenties, we will remember all the exceptionally talented musicians who passed through this small hall that served as a springboard for them and that we now meet in the biggest international festivals; from Richard Bona to Angélique Kidjo via Monica Passos, Ultramarine, Les Étoiles, Sylvain Luc, Rido Bayonne, Leni Stern, Thierry Elliez, Etienne Mbappé, Mario Canonge, Nguyen Le and many others, the list is long of those who have heated up our walls and our stage.
It is the pride of the Baiser Salé to have encouraged so many talents by betting on their then unknown names and it is our passion and our pleasure to continue on this rewarding path which sees the birth and recognition of the talents of tomorrow. It is often during our Monday jam sessions orchestrated by percussionist François Constantin that many young instrumentalists find the opportunity to be noticed by the “big names” and other old wolves who are always on the lookout for new musical sensations, and it is often around a drink that group projects are born after memorable jams.
Here everything is allowed, jazz club yes, but not forgetting that jazz is born from crossbreeding, all the experiences are good and the programming gives pride of place to the mixing of cultures, the only requirement asked of the musicians: to perform. Here musicians are free to create, to invent, to associate music that did not meet, even names that do not know each other, to try bands from which magic can be born, it is here that CHIC HOT was born, ULTRAMARINE too. Sylvain Luc found a cozy corner at the Baiser Salé where his music blossomed in duet with Stéphane Belmondo: Le Baiser Salé donné des ailes …. And then there’s the bar and not just any bar… Open from 5:30 p.m. to 6 a.m., a horseshoe-shaped landmark for all musicians’ late nights, it allows regulars to chat face to face and novices to join the conversation while keeping an eye on the bartender who shakes his cocktails of a thousand and one colors, with summery reflections… to the rhythm of one of the countless concerts broadcast on the video screen, some of which are not found on the market…
